We are all aware that technology is changing the ways in which we act, socialize, spend our down-time, and learn. I bet all of us have had at least one moment in which we wanted (or maybe even decided to) play a game instead of working on homework.

Well, through gamification and game-based learning, we can combine the two. These methods of education have the potential to increase student engagement and improve learning outcomes. Why? Because games are fun, interactive, and stimulating. Through gamification we can incorporate games or game-like elements into our curriculum. Learn more about the benefits of gamification.

In this course, we are going to experience many of the fundamental aspects of gamification; first by defining gamification and then by participating in a gamified course.

You will be playing games as a part of this course, but that doesn't mean that this course will be without it's challenges. In fact, part of the allure of games is the challenge that they present. When you are playing games in this course, you will be asked to think critically them, their mechanics, and how those mechanics can be used in educational settings.

It's important to note that this course may run differently than other courses you've taken. You will have optional assignments (side quests), experience points, freedom of choice in how you complete assignments, and other game inspired surprises. If you have any questions about the course, games, or assignments, that can be answered by your classmates, please post them to the Virtual Clubhouse. Everyone is highly encouraged to use this discussion board throughout the course as a place to ask questions and share experiences. Before you begin, read the syllabus for more information about the format, objectives, and expectations of this course. Additionally, review the Technology Requirements for this course.

Once you have reviewed the Syllabus, the Getting Started folder, and Level 0, begin "playing" Level 1 (aka Week 1), which is where your assignments begin. Remember, main quests are required assignments and side quests are optional. We will discuss more about how quests, experience points (XP), and other details about our gamified course in Level 2.
